Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced his willingness to head the party, highlighting the honesty, skill, and humility needed to lead the NPP and Ghana.
Speaking to supporters on Thursday, August 28, following his nomination file at the party headquarters in Accra, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the Party’s need for a leader who embodies the fundamental principles of the nation and the party, adding that he possessed all the necessary attributes for the position.
“The NPP and Ghana are demanding a leader who embodies deep intellect, humility, respect for all persons, unity, courage, foresight, and resilience. As the NPP seeks a leader who represents the character of this party’s tradition and the values of our forebears, I, Mahamudu Bawumia, offer myself to lead the party into the 2028 elections,” he said.
He emphasized that the goal of the next primary was to uphold the party’s core principles rather than only choose a flagbearer. He asserts that the decision made by delegates on January 31 will decide whether the NPP adheres to its core principles or turns into a party that widens the gap between the rich and the poor.
Hundreds of fervent fans flocked to the party offices for the filing event. As he formally turned in his nomination paperwork, Dr. Bawumia—accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia—was met with thunderous applause.
It will be a close race for Dr. Bawumia. Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, his closest opponent from the 2023 election, has also submitted an application. Former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, Abetifi MP, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong are among the other candidates.
