As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, Development Economist and Research Fellow at the University of Ghana’s Centre for Social Policy Studies, Dr. George Domfeh, says he would be shocked if former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia fails to win the contest.
According to Dr. Domfeh, extensive research shows that Dr. Bawumia is currently leading the race with over 60 percent support nationwide. He further revealed that Dr. Bawumia commands more than 70 percent support across the five northern regions.
Beyond the northern belt, Dr. Domfeh noted that Dr. Bawumia is also winning overwhelmingly in Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Ahafo, Western, Bono East, and Oti regions.
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee Musem Morning with Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt FM, Dr. Domfeh described the contest as largely a two-horse race between Dr. Bawumia and former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong.
He explained that Kennedy Agyapong currently leads in the Central, Western North, and Volta regions.
The NPP presidential race features former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
