A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Jalilu Ateku, has dismissed claims that Ghana’s democracy is under attack, stating that while the country faces challenges, there is no evidence to support such assertions.
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee mu Nsem on Bryt FM, Dr. Ateku explained that the right to demonstrate is a key feature of every democratic society. He noted that in some countries, demonstrations may not be permitted at all, while in others, organizers are required to work with the police to ensure public safety.
According to him, there are instances where the police may request demonstrators to postpone a planned protest if they do not have enough personnel to provide adequate security. Once both parties agree on a new date, the demonstration can proceed peacefully.
Dr. Ateku argued that if citizens are able to organize demonstrations against the government, public institutions, or other authorities, it is difficult to conclude that democracy is under attack.
“There is nothing I can point to and say Ghana’s democracy is under attack,” he said. “Every country faces challenges, but suggesting that democracy is under attack is an exaggeration.”
He acknowledged that citizens have the constitutional right to express their concerns and criticize leaders, but stressed that such criticism should be done responsibly.
Dr. Ateku further urged Ghanaians to avoid insulting others while expressing their opinions, reminding the public that every individual has a family and deserves respect.
He added that Ghanaian cultural values emphasize good upbringing and respect for others. According to him, families raise their children to exhibit good behaviour so that they become responsible members of society and bring honour to their families rather than disgrace.
