Former Ghana Football Association President, Mr. Awuah Nyamekye has added his voice to the captaincy row that occurred at the Black Stars during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.
Gyan, who has captained the Black Stars for a record seven years was elevated to the position of “General Captain” with a month to go for the tournament as the then coach Kwesi Appiah named Dede Ayew as the permanent captain for the national team, a move several Ghanaians criticized.
A chunk of Ghanaians attributed Black Star’s abysmal performance to the change in captaincy before the tournament.
The Black Stars recorded one of their worse ever performances in the history of the tournament after suffering a round of 16 elimination.
However, the former FA capo sharing his thought an interview with Don Summer of Angel FM said, “I think Kwesi Appiah did a terrible mistake in stripping Gyan off the captain’s armband because he had a similar experience during his playing days with the Black Stars in 1992 which he didn’t like it”
“At the time we stripped him of the captaincy, he wasn’t happy and so, why do you have to replicate it on Gyan? He asked.
“He should have learned some lessons from what happened 28 years ago but I think he didn’t take a clue from the bad experience he witnessed. If he had learned from his experience of captaincy related issues during his time, he would have handled Asamoah Gyan’s issue in a more matured way”
“Once he complained after the cold treatment after we stripped him of the captaincy, he shouldn’t have replicated it on someone” he added.
