Residents of Choggu Manayili in the Northern Regional Capital Tamale attacked police officers on Wednesday living one shot dead.
The shooting incident took place after the chief of the community had invited the police service to save the life of a suspected thief who has been mobbed by the members of the community.
As the police interfered in the mob, they now attacked the police in an attempt to stop them from saving the life of the suspected thief.
An eyewitness narrating how the incident happened asserted that the Northern Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Otuo Acheampong said the suspect had been tired down by the residents in the area who were on the verge of killing the thief after they found stolen cattle in his possession when the police got there.
The mob was angry that the police had come to rescue the thief, he said.
“They had succeeded in rescuing the suspected thief into the police van. And then the irate mob which had wanted to lynch him before the arrival of the police started to even to snatch the suspect from the police, and people started…even they fired and missiles were thrown at the police, and even one of the officers was hit in the hand”.
According to the superintendent, the bullet that hit the victim was astray when did the police fired a warning shot in response to when the mob tried to attack them.
The Victim was pronounced dead shortly after he was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital when shot in the stomach he added.
The suspect was rescued from the residents and the police have not made any further arrest.
