Residents of both Old and New Mangoase, farming communities in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region on Tuesday staged a demonstration over deplorable roads to the Communities.
Highlife Musician Kaakyire Kwame Fosu known in showbiz as KK Fosu who is a native of the community joined the demonstrators.
The demonstrators clad in the red armed band, and dressed in red and black shirts holding placards with different inscriptions of their grievances, marched through the streets of the community amidst chanting of war songs and drumming disregarded present of the security personnel who initially attempted to stop the exercise of their right to demonstrate.
Mangoase, once a vibrant farming Community in pre and post-independent era where the state constructed agricultural storage facilities to purchase farm produce including cocoa from farmers for export is now stricken with abject poverty.
The Community has been neglected by subsequent governments as all six roads linking the Community to surrounding towns continue to deteriorate affecting agriculture compelling the youth to ditch farming to seek greener pastures in urban areas.
According to the residents, all roads linking the Mangoase community to other communities are in deplorable conditions making Okada is the only convenient means of transport to the community.
Construction work on Tinkong to Mangoase road by the current government has however stalled as the contractor has abandoned the project for months now.
The Leader of Mangoase Youth Association – which convened the demonstration – Hajia Rabiatu Yakubu, said Mangoase Community has been dejected to wallow in abject poverty as it has been denied basic social amenities particularly roads.
She said, residents both home and abroad were levied twice to hire grader to shape the Pakro to Mangoase road to make it motorable but are now fed up with rhetorics of promises by government and Member of Parliament for the Area, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah’s lack of concern on their plight
