Four Ghanaian women who lost their husbands have been considered to replace their husbands in Parliament.
One other woman, Gifty Twum-Ampofo got a sympathy vote in Abuakwa North of the Eastern Region to replace the late MP, J. B. Danquah-Adu who was killed in his house.
The wife of the slain Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfantseman, in the Central Region, Ophelia Hayford, has been selected as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) replacement nominee in the 2020 Parliamentary election in the area.
Ophelia Hayford, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was selected at a meeting of the NPP on Tuesday (October 13, 2020) to replace Mr. Ekow Kwansah Hayford, hitherto, the NPP’s Parliamentary nominee for Election 2020 was killed by suspected armed robbers.
Before the general elections 2016, Member for Abuakwa North in the Eastern Region was killed in his house and was replaced by Gifty Twum-Ampofo who was elected in a by-election to replace the slain MP for the area, J. B. Danquah-Adu.
In 2018, One of the widows of Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko, Madam Lydia S. Alhassan has been elected to represent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Parliamentary by-election following Mr. Agyarko’s sudden death.
In a primary, Madam Lydia S. Alhassan secured 441 votes to beat four other contenders.
Also In 2016, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Shai Osudoku, Mrs. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, was elected as the Parliamentary Candidate and won as Member of Parliament after her husband, William Ocloo died in a road accident at Juaso in the Asante Akyem South District of Ashanti Region.
She polled 20,114 votes to beat three other contenders namely, Mr. Stephen Nene Oyortey of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 6,518 votes, Mr. Emmanuel Maatey Tetteh of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), who polled 3,203 votes, and Mr. Solomon Dorh, who stood on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and got 154 votes.
Mrs. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo is seeking re-election in 2020.
