New signing for Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities, Asamoah Gyan has opened up ahead of the commencement of the upcoming Ghana Premier League campaign.
The domestic top-flight league is set to start next week after several months of inactive football.
Gyan who has been without a club since January after ending his stint with Indian Super League side NorthEast United signed for the Accra based club on transfer deadline day and is in line to feature in the forthcoming GPL season.
Some Ghanaians has made a strong statement for Legon Cities ahead of the season as they believe the nouveau riche Ghanaian side are now a serious 2020-21 Premier League title contenders with the arrival of the 34-year-old.
The all-time top scorer for Ghana brings a wealth of experience to the club and will be relied on as the source of goals having struggled last season.
The Royals were the least scoring team during the truncated 2019-2020 season and Gyan’s arrival signal’s the club’s intent domestically.
Reacting to the news, Gyan said, “Saying you can challenge for the league is very easy. You can purchase all the best players in the world but without knowing what you like, we cannot be successful”
“We have to play some matches before we will know whether we can win the league or not. The most important thing is that management is doing their best because they’ve signed players they think can help the progress of the team” he said.
The former Sunderland forward has started training with his new club as they prepare for the Ghana Premier League season.
Legon Cities will take on Brekum Chelsea in matchday one of the GPL at the Accra Sports Stadium.
