John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has suspended his six-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region following the demise of former president Jerry John Rawlings.
Mr. Mahama announced this at a mini-rally at Obuasi.
The NDC leader in announcing the suspension said a date for resumption of the tour will be communicated later.
“We didn’t hear good news today. We just received some very sad news that our founder, Jerry John Rawlings has passed on and it makes it impossible for us to continue this campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.
So I have spoken to our chairman of our national campaign committee and the committee has agreed that we announce a brief suspension of this campaign,” he said.

Subsequently, James Agyenim Boateng, the campaign spokesperson of the former president has stated to the effect that the campaign has been suspended indefinitely.
Death of JJ Rawlings
Former President, Jerry John Rawlings died in the early hours of Thursday, November 12, 2020.
Sources claim he died from Covid-19 believed to have contracted during the funeral rite of his late Mother Madam Victoria Agbotui in October 2020.
Madam Agbotui died at the age of 101.
Jerry John Rawlings was born on June 22, 1947.
J. J Rawlings affectionately called Papa-J was a charismatic military leader and subsequently became a politician who ruled Ghana from 1981 to 2001 and also a brief period in 1979.
He led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.
Many Ghanaians have taken to social media to mourn the former President who is the founder of the largest Opposition party the National Democratic Congress, NDC.
