Residents of Odumase Krobo in the Eastern Region are calling on President Akufo Addo to intervene to find a lasting solution to the impasse between residents in the Krobo area and Electricity Company of Ghana on over billing saga.
The over the five-year feud between Krobos and ECG led to deadly clashes in May 2019 resulting in the shooting of protestors which two died while at least five sustained gunshot wounds. One of the injured JHS pupils had her leg amputated while a footballer is crippled by the injury.
The violence was triggered by an attempt by then PDS to disconnect customers indebted to the company despite residents’ agitation that the bills were outrageously high.
The resident says, the Minister of Energy John Peter Amewu reneged on his promise to set up a committee to investigate the impasse.
They say the situation has left the matter to fester unresolved creating anxiety among residents.
Addressing the media Thursday, a group calling itself United Krobo Foundation says they have petitioned President Akufo Addo over the matter but nothing has been done.
They, therefore, reminded the government that the impasse has not been resolved, that, demand by Krobos for the cancellation of the overbilling arrears has not been affected.
They say the entire Krobo enclave wants to get direct power supply from VRA instead of ECG stating that, VRA owes the people of Krobo area social responsibility to supply free electricity for disposing them from their land for the construction of the Kpong Dam.
Boryor Nathan -Vice Secretary to the United Krobo Foundation who addressed the media said, Krobos are peace-loving people but will not sit down for their rights to be trampled upon.
