The Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress in the Lower West Akyem Constituency of the Eastern Region, Mr. Benjamin Yamoah has called on Government and the Road Safety Authority to engage Vehicle expects on Roads to check vehicles that are not worthy for the Road to reduce accident.
The experts, according to Mr. Yamoah should be at the Police Barrier to assist the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department to check Vehicles with fault.
Speaking on the Road Accident report released by the MTTD in Eastern Region, Mr. Benjamin Yamoah said the MTTD is failing the Country because most of them in the Road are failing to perform their duties accordingly.
An overall of 425 lives got lost through road accidents in the Eastern Region in 2020 as against 289 deaths recorded in 2019.
More than 332 people also suffered various degrees of injuries within the same period.
Out of the 425 deaths, 109 were pedestrians, indicating a slight increase as compared to 101 pedestrian deaths in 2019.
Mr. Ben Yamoah who is also a Secretary with the Asamankese, Afloa station of the GPRTU was shocked over the number of deaths recorded in the Region despite the presence of Police MTTD on the Road and intensive campaign by the Road Safety Authority.
He called on the Ghana Highways Authority and the Ministry of Roads to fix broken Traffic Lights, potholes on highways, and Road signs which also attribute to the accident.
The Communications Officer urged Drivers in the Country to come together and form an Association for their welfare.
