The Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service recorded 517 road accident deaths and arrested 455 Road Traffic offenders between January and February 2021.
Out of the number, 423 have been put before court and 362 were convicted and others were fined Ghs205, 190.00 under the period.
According to the Director of Research and Education at the MTTD, Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, the figure is likely to sedge in Easter Season and said the MTTD will deploy to detect offenses that fuel this clashes such as over speeding, drink driving, drugs, and others which affect drivers on the road.
He said people who abuse sirens, drivers who park vehicles in unauthorized places because January and February 2021 road accidents are unusual which increased by 11% as compared to 2020.
Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng said road crashes recorded in the first two months in 2021 jumped from 2,302 in 2019 to 2,560 in 2021 involving private and commercial vehicles and motorbikes amounting to 4,332, which also saw a 9% increase compared to 2020.
The Director of Research and Education at the MTTD said the number of persons injured in the period was 2,766 and in the process.
He said the police will not spare any road traffic offenders in this Easter period and called on passengers, drivers, and Transport unions to support the police for an accident-free period.
