A coalition of Members of Parliament (MPs), Religious and Traditional Leaders, and Civil Society Organisations against the promotion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) in the country have presented a draft copy of the Bill which prohibits the promotion of LGBTQI Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.
The Bill provides medical, psychological, and other forms of support for practitioners who want to get help for their conditions and is expected to become a reference point for countries and parliaments around the world.
Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, President of the Parliamentary Fellowship and Coalition of MPs against LGBTQI presented a draft copy of the Bill to Speaker Bagbin during a Speaker’s Prayer Breakfast meeting.
Members of Parliament who sponsored the bill to prohibit LGBTQI activities in Ghana include; Mr. Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo Prampram; Mr. Andy Appiah Kubi- Asante-Akim; Rev John Ntim Fordjour-Assin South; and Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa-North Tongu.
The rest are; Mr. Kweku Asante Boateng- Asante-Akim South; Mrs. Helen Adwoa Ntoso- Krachi West; and Ms. Francisca Oteng- Kwabre East Constituency.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated that same-sex marriage will not be legalized in Ghana.
Speaking at the installation of the second Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Ghana at Asante Mampong in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, [February 27, 2021], President Akufo-Addo stressed that it will never happen during his presidency.
“I have said this before, let me in conclusion stress again, that it will not be under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that same-sex marriage will be legal, that same-sex marriage will be legalized in Ghana, it will never happen in my time as President.”
“Let me repeat, it will never happen in my time as President,” President Akufo-Addo stressed.
