A 38-year-old woman, Gifty Arthur has been convicted to 90 days imprisonment in hard labor for defrauding by pretense, contrary to section 131 of criminal offenses Act 29/60 by the Asamankese Circuit Court.
Gifty Arthur, the accused pleaded guilty and was convicted on her plea when she appeared before the court presided over by His Honour Abubakari Abass Adams.
General Sargent Samuel Owusu, a Prosecution officer, told the court that the complainants, in this case, are members of the Apostolic Church-Ghana in Asuaba, near Adeiso while the accused is a trader from Kwadaso-Kumasi.
He said on 08/08/2021, at about 10:00am, the complainants were having church service and the accused person joined them and introduced herself as a philanthropist who gives loans to people in need.
The complainants showed interest and paid various sums of monies totaling ¢2,500.00 to the accused person who absconded after the receipt of the money.
The prosecution statement said the accused went into hiding, but on 28/08/2021, a member of the church spotted her at Suhum and alerted the Police to arrest her and she was later transferred to Adeiso police station for further investigation.
Upon thorough Interrogation, the accused admitted to the offense on the charge sheet and was arraigned before court for prosecution.
