There was dramatic confusion on Thursday during the confirmation of the Municipal Chief Executive, MCE, nominee for Suhum, Margaret Darko Darkwa.
Armed Police Officers allegedly deployed from the Eastern Regional Police headquarters and Suhum District Police Command took over the Assembly Hall where the election was being conducted and prevented all Journalists from entering to cover the exercise.
The journalists including those following the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong were also blocked.
The Suhum Police Commander, Superintendent Mohammed Cantona said he was instructed by the Municipal Coordinating Director and the Information Services Officer, Ms. Ivy, not to allow the media entry.
The Police commander said the assembly members and few dignitaries were the only accredited persons.
The situation attracted scores of the NPP members in Suhum Constituency to the assembly ground to agitate.
They expressed their disgust over conspiracy to manipulate the process in favor of the MCE nominee.
Indeed, the MCE nominee was reportedly confirmed after polling all 42 Yes votes representing 100%.
The media subsequently snubbed the Municipal Information Officer who invited them to cover closing remarks by various speakers after the declaration.
The renomination of the Suhum MCE Margaret Darko Darkwa was fraughted with controversies due to a feud between her, the Constituency Executives of her Party, NPP, and the Member of Parliament for the area.
The enmity has led to several clashes between supporters of the feuding factions.
One of such incidents was August 28, 2021, bloody clashes at a funeral between supporters of the MP and Frank Asiedu Bekoe alias Protozoa who is alleged to be from the camp of the MCE being groomed to oust the MP in the next primaries.
Many of the Assembly Members had earlier vowed to vote against the nominee whom they accused of being incompetent and very divisive.
