Ghana international Rashid Sumaila believes the Black Stars can make an impact in the upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The much-anticipated tournament has been scheduled between January 9 and February 6, 2022, in Cameroon.
Ghana is among the 24 countries set to battle it out for the covetous trophy in the Central Africa country.
The four-time African Champions are in search of a fifth AFCON title.
Ahead of the tournament, Ghana engaged reigning African Champions Algeria in a friendly at the Education City Stadium on Wednesday and suffered a heavy defeat.
The Black Stars preparations for AFCON 2021 suffered a jolt on Wednesday night when they got pummeled 3-0 by the North African side.
Adam Ounas gave the Algerians a first-half lead before an own goal from Jonathan Mensah and Islam Slimani’s cool finish ensured the African and Arab champions head to AFCON with a confidence-boosting victory.
Despite the defeat, Rashid Sumaila, a member of the 2014 World Cup squad says the team can make an impact.
“Ghana will do very well in this tournament,“ he told Koforidua-based Bryt FM.
“Forget about the result, Algeria just finished playing the Arab Cup n secondly, they are the defending champions, we will not meet them in early stages but we can meet them in the finals”
“This was just a preparation game to the tournament, trust me there is hope,” he said.
