Some suspected wee smokers have this morning set ablaze an abandoned one storey structure opposite uniCredit near the Prince Boateng roundabout in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
But for the intervention of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the police, many stores around including the Koforidua Central market would have been affected.
Three fire thunders were deployed to the scene to salvage the situation at the time this reporter arrived.
Speaking with mybrytfmonline.com, the assistant Eastern Regional fire commander, DO1 Joseph Koranteng said preliminary investigation shows some wee smokers may have dumped a “piece” in the building and that has led to the fire.
He advised that the municipal assembly should with immediate effect demolish the structure which has become a breeding place for wee smokers.
He also advised the general public to always be on alert and endeavors to switch off all electrical budgets before stepping out of their homes.
