A former Eastern Regional Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, Mark Oliver Kevor says, the ruling New Patriotic Party’s delegates’ votes against candidates supported by the Flagstaff House during the election is an indication that President Akufo Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia have lost grip in the party.
He said the election was “characterized by a show of power, and naked and obscene display of opulence, the Eastern Regional NPP Conference last weekend yielded some interesting outcomes”
According to Mark Oliver Kevor “First of all, it was already public knowledge that it was a contest between Government and government interests, and the Hon. Bryan Acheampong and his loyalists. This was evident in the heavy presence of virtually the whole Flagstaff house led by Gabby in Koforidua! Despite marshaling MDCEs and Appointees to put pressure on delegates, Jeff Konadu, the lead antagonist won convincingly.
This is a vote of no confidence in government. The party members refused to listen to the President and his assigns.
At this moment, the NPP members themselves are tired of their government and are dying to see change”. Mark Oliver Kevor said in a statement issued.
The Eastern Regional Chairman hopeful continued that, a careful analysis of individuals elected as regional executives of the party points to square pegs in round holes in a crucial election such as 2024.
“Again, these elected executives are not new. Effectively, what the NPP has given us is old wine in a new bottle. The leader, Jeff Konadu, was a Regional Secretary and has been around.
The Secretary, Tony Osei-Adjei, was a Regional Research and Elections Officer and currently Regional Manager of the NCA. The Assistant Secretary, Nana Yaw Papin, has held that position for some time. The Organiser, Jerry Osei-Poku was the Regional Youth Organiser. The Youth Organiser, Adamu Raha, was a Constituency Youth organizer and well known. The Treasurer was retained. The two vice-chairmen are no new faces. The surprising inclusion of Mercy Darkoa “Obuor” as Women’s Organiser doesn’t bring much change to the Team. Unfortunately for the NPP, this is the team to lead the party to the opposition”
Mark Oliver Kevor pointed out the tribal imbalance in the makeup of the newly elected NPP regional executives.
“In addition, the Outcome of the NPP conference has also only emphasized the tribal identity of the NPP party. Whilst Eastern Region is highly diverse and heterogeneous in terms of ethnicity, the new Eastern Region NPP Executives did not reflect such a Regional Character. For example, apart from the Nasara Coordinator which is a restricted position for the Zongos, and the Youth Organiser, Raha, the remaining 8 out of the 10 executives (80%) are Akans with No Ewe or typical Krobo in an elective position. In the case of the 1st Vice Chairman- Twum Barimah, even though he is a resident of Yilo Krobo, he obviously can’t be seen as a true representation of the Krobo interest. This is unfortunate”
Nonetheless, Mark Oliver Kevor has congratulated the new Eastern Regional NPP executives for their elections.
He however believes “they have been voted for at the wrong time!! There is nothing they can do to change the current state of the Region and Country as a whole!! Already, this is a team that has confronted their government in a very acrimonious manner that has left the NPP irreparably divided in the Region. What new can they ask of Government to do in the region?
The hardship continues! Increasing prices of goods and services continue!! The lack of development in the region continues!!! In Sum, this is just a team given the task to usher the NPP into opposition”
