The absence of a substantive minister for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, according to former Gender Minister Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, is badly affecting the country and the demographic groups that fall under the Ministry’s jurisdiction.
She claimed that the President needed to wake up and appoint a new sector minister.
President Akufo-Addo named Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, as caretaker Gender Minister on October 6, 2021, after Sarah Adwoa Safo’s leave of absence, was prolonged.
According to a statement from the Presidency, Dome Kwabena is on leave for personal reasons. She has yet to return to her job.
While reacting to news of two young people being flogged in Wa, as captured on film, in a conversation with Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise show on 3FM, Nana Oye said “As President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should sit up and take a decision on appointing a substantive minister. Whatever it is, we will need to have a Minister in the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, to see to it that the work is done.
“As we have it now, work has slowed down, there is a retrogression and it is not good enough for the people of Ghana and for the demographic groups, they are suffering.”
On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, the two young people who were flogged were paraded in front of the Wa Naa’s Palace forecourt and lashed by a group.
The event, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, was captured on film and uploaded on social media.
