On Thursday, 27th October 2022, the second session of community sensitization on responsible mining at Akoon, a mining community within the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal of the Western Region was held.
Sensitizing the Akoon community stakeholders including the Chiefs, the Assembly, District Executives of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM), Assembly Members and members of the Community.
The Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister, George Mireku-Duker charged the gathering to support the Government to fight this illegal mining menace.
He emphasised that a collaborative approach is required to augment Government’s policies in order to win this war.
The Chiefs and stakeholders in acceptance of the task entrusted to them requested the implementation of more community mining schemes to support the existing Tarkwa Community Mining Scheme and to serve as an alternative and responsible means for their people.
The Deputy minister was accompanied by the Western Regional Chairman of the NPP, Ndede Siah, Dep. CEO of the Minerals Commission, Hon. Samuel Tika, Advisor on Mines to the Minister, Mr Benjamin Aryee, Mr Kofi Adjei, Chief Inspector of Mines and other officials from the Minerals Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
