Angry Residents of Nyamekrom a suburb of New Juaben South in the Eastern region on Monday, October 31, 2022, blocked a temporal bypass road to the community in protest over the deplorable nature of their road.
It took the intervention of armed police to clear the road before school buses, and private and commercial vehicles could pass.
The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Michael Okyere Baafi and Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia on the night of October 27, 2020 cut sod for the construction of the Nyamekrom road.
The 10.5 Kilometer Road was expected to be completed in eighteen (18) months.
However, the road has been abandoned.
The situation has become so bad that a bypass road is used by commuters.
The convener of the protest, Mr Desmond Ameyaw accused the contractor of what he described as shoddy work regarding the construction of a bridge.
According to him, the bridge is almost washed away hence hanging a week after the member of parliament for New Juaben South Michael Okyere Baafi commissioned it hence drivers are using a bypass to the community.
He further highlighted that due to the bad nature of the road, drivers charge passengers exorbitant fares.
He also claimed, there have been many incidences of miscarriages among pregnant women in the Nyamekrom township as a result of the deplorable road.
The angry residents warned they will block the access of politicians to campaign in the community come 2024 if the road is not constructed.
The spokesperson for the chief of Nyamekrom, Mr Augustine Afum Odame also lament that Nyamekrom has been neglected for too long and therefore requested that their road should be constructed for them with immediate effect.
He accused the MP for New Juaben South Michael Okyere Baafi of deception.
The Assembly member for Nyamekrom electoral area, Hon. Enoch Boahen said the contractor has abandoned the site due to a lack of funds.
He, therefore, urged the government to release funds to the contractor to return to the site.
