Mozambique’s security forces killed at least 11 people and injured dozens more during protests following the October 9 general elections, according to Human Rights Watch.
The unrest erupted after the electoral commission announced that the ruling party, FRELIMO, won the elections amidst allegations of political violence and irregularities.
Protests turned violent on October 24 when police used live ammunition and tear gas against demonstrators, resulting in over 50 serious injuries, including children affected by tear gas.
Witnesses reported multiple fatalities in cities like Chimoio and Nampula, where police shot at crowds throwing stones.
