Enrollment for the free Senior High School policy in the Eastern Region has increased by 46.12% between 2016/17 to 2020/2021.
About 185,706 students are currently enjoying the Policy which featured free Technical and Vocational Schools in the 2021/2022 academic year.
Regional Minister, Honourable Seth Kwame Acheampong briefing the media at Accra in the Ministry of Information said in the 2016/17 academic year, the student population was 127,095 compared to 171,602 in the 2019/2020 academic year.
He said the total number of females as of the 2020/2021 academic year was 94,140 and males are 91,566 respectively.
Article 25 1b of the 1992 Constitution states that “Secondary education in its different forms including technical and vocational education, shall be made generally available and accessible to all by every appropriate means, and in particular, by the progressive introduction of free education”.
The NANA AKUFO ADDO lead government has given full effect to SDG 4.1 with the implementation of a Free SHS Policy.
The program is anchored in the below pillars; Removal of cost barriers through the absorption of fees approved by the GES council, Expansion of infrastructure and facilities to accommodate the expected increase in enrolment, Improvement in Quality, and Equity through the provision of core textbooks and supplementary readers, teacher rationalization and deployment, and Development of Employable Skills
