An anti-galamsey task force, made up of the Kotoku Environmental Task Force, has arrested 20 suspected illegal miners at New Abirem in the Eastern Region.
The suspects, including 18 Ghanaians and two Chinese nationals, were apprehended for engaging in illegal mining activities in the Birim North District.
The arrests occurred during a special operation on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at mining sites near the Abirem Roman Missionary House.
In addition to the arrests, the task force seized two excavators, mining equipment, and two pumping machines.
Sources within the task force allege that the Birim North District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Raymond Nana Damptey, and Nana Aduasenehene are behind the ongoing illegal mining activities on Kotoku Abirem land.
All 20 suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court soon.
A video has surfaced showing the Birim North DCE, Hon. Raymond Nana Damptey, allegedly attempting to prevent the task force from stopping the miners from bringing equipment to the site.
