A Deputy Chairman of Electoral Commission Dr. Srebour Quacoo has said the initial error recorded in the collation of the Eastern regional Presidential election results could have been avoided if due diligence was done.
He, however, said the most important thing is that it was quickly detected and corrected even though the opposition NDC was unavailable to sign.
The Eastern Regional Directorate of the Electoral Commission earlier announced the total votes polled by Nana Akufo Addo in the Eastern Region as 729,146 votes as against John Mahama’s 454,176 votes
However, the EC made a U-turn a few hours later to say that it inadvertently omitted Ayensuano constituency Presidential results which were added increasing Akufo Addo’s votes to 752,061 while that of John Mahama increased to 470,999.
This has created credibility crises of the results with the opposition party raising issues of fraud.
The Electoral Commission on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, declared the incumbent President of Nana Akufo-Addo the winner of the country’s presidential election.
The 76-year-old Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) beat his opponent and predecessor John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with controversial 51.59% of the votes.
The EC later admitted to making mistakes in the computation of the results but claimed it does not affect the outcome.
This claim has however been challenged as calculations point to variation in the figures using the new figures presented by EC.
The Opposition Party has therefore rejected the results citing flaws and fraud.
