Out of the 24 coaches leading the various teams at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021, ten (10) are from Europe.
The remaining fourteen (14) are Africans, coaching their own countries at the competition being held in Cameroon in Central Africa.
This shows a little growth of trust in local coaches because, at the 2019 AFCON, there were 13 European coaches and 11 Africans.
However, there are still many assertions that African countries must use their own coaches in managing the teams as they are more familiar with the local terrain than the foreign ones.
Others are also of the view that many African coaches have failed to prove their competence one ay or the other and cannot be trusted with such positions.
There has also been a school of thought that African coaches are mostly manipulated by management and other powerful football people by recruiting their choices of players rather than selecting based on competence.
