As Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta is to present the 2022 budget today and in view of that the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the True Drivers Union (TDU), Mr Yaw Barima has pleaded with the government to scrap off the road toll tax.
According to him, drivers are no more willing to pay some Six taxes including the Road Toll Levy, Sanitation and Formulation Levy, Energy Debt Recovery Levy, Fuel Marking Margin, Special Petroleum Taxes, Road Fund Levy because they do not see the relevance of paying these taxes.
Speaking on Accra based Dadi FM morning show ‘Efa Wo ho’, Mr Yaw Barima emphatically stated that most of the taxes paid by the Drivers are obviously not used for its purpose and does not see the need to continue “fetching water into baskets”.
“We are ordering the government to scrap off the Road Toll Levy and Five (5) other taxes because we do not see the use. We buy 4.5 billion litres of fuel every year which is about GHS 200,000,000; and according to the government, every one kilometre of road costs the nation Ghc1,000,000; so if we give you (government) Ghc200,000,000 a year, Obaapa, will you (government) not be able to complete a Two-lane Taifa to Kumasi road,” Mr Yaw Barima asked (rhetorically).
