Former Ghana international Dan Quaye says he knew the Black Stars will underperform at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The Black Stars threw away a two-goal lead as they drew with Mozambique in six minutes of additional time. The team now face another early exit at the continental showpiece having last suffer elimination at group stage in AFCON 2021 held in Cameroon.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, the former Hearts of Oak defender said he knew the team won’t perform considering the players selected for the tournament.
“I knew the team was not going to perform at the Africa Cup because of how players were invited into the team. The discrimination and selfish interest has been too much in terms of player call up and I think that is killing the national team”
“I don’t understand why Mohammed Salisu played ahead of Daniel Amartey. It’s about time we correct our mistakes. Amartey has a lot of experience when it comes to tournament like this, so why do you bench him. The team lacked leadership in defense in the absence of Amartey. He could have controlled the defense if he had been given the chance to play at the tournament” he said.
Ghana drew two games at the Nations Cup, finishing in third place in Group B, behind Cape Verde and Egypt.
