Surprisingly, this election has not seen the long, overnight lines that are typically connected to Ghanaian general elections, with the exception of a few locations. Long lines of voters and voting-related materials like chairs, stones, and gallons would have typically formed overnight as worried voters who wanted to cast their ballots early in the day skipped sleep.
The stones and quarts would stand in for voters in the lines who would like to take care of other matters and who have earned their spots by receiving recognition from their “neighbors.”
This is true even though this year’s election has been dubbed a “high stakes” election, whatever that term implies.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s vice president and presidential candidate, landed in his hometown of Walewale, in the North East Region, on Friday evening.
When polls open, the vice president is anticipated to cast his ballot in Kperiga, a suburb of Walewale. After serving as President AkufoAddo’s vice president for the previous eight years, Dr. Bawumia is running for president for the first time on the NPP platform.
In a same vein, National Democratic Congress presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama, who is certain of winning, came at his home base in the BoleBamboi district in the Savannah Region on Friday to cast his ballot.
Since BoleBamboi was the constituency’s member of parliament before becoming Ghana’s president and vice president, he has great personal and political significance for Mr. Mahama.
