The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) flagbearer, Kofi Akpaloo, has urged Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), to reverse her decision to print ballots featuring the late Madam Akua Donkor’s image. According to Kofi, the 2024 presidential ballots should be printed without the deceased GFP flagbearer’s image.
Mr. Akpaloo claims that her image would have been removed because the EC had authorized Madam Akua Donkor as the GFP’s founder and leader’s successor. In keeping with this, Mr. Akpaloo requests that the EC print the ballots sans Madam Akua Donkor’s picture.
He contends that the inclusion of Madam Akua’s Donkor on the ballot could affect the results of the parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for December 7.
Mr. Akpaloo reaffirmed during a press conference on Wednesday, November 13, in Accra, that removing Madam Akua Donkor’s picture from the ballot would significantly preserve the integrity of the December 7 elections, where any misunderstandings would be prevented.
He said, “having a ballot paper with Akua Donkor’s picture is going to create a whole lot of problems in the country. People are going to vote for Akua Donkor, of whom we are all aware that she is not alive so how are they going to do the counting? Because with the presidential polls, we do the calculations based on the percentage garnered by each candidate.”
“Are we going to say that those votes that were cast for her will be taken off the ballot or are they going to be counted?
Mr. Akpaloo argued, “we don’t want a situation whereby a losing candidate will say he will not accept the results because of percentages, and so we are asking the EC to reprint new ballot papers without Akua Donkor’s picture on them” he stated.
