The Member of Parliament for Suhum in Eastern Region Hon. Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, has denied reports suggesting that he has withdrawn from contesting in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections as Independent candidate.
In a press release issued by his campaign team, the MP described the claims as “false and misleading,” accusing certain individuals of attempting to tarnish his reputation.
“The circulation of the news is not only portraying a false and misleading reportage, but a calculated attempt to tarnish the image of the honourable member,” the statement said.
Hon. Oboafo Kwadjo Asante reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Suhum, stating that he has no intention of abandoning the mandate given to him by his constituents.
“Hon. Oboafo Kwadjo Asante holds in high esteem the trusted mandate of Suhum constituents and wouldn’t disappoint the trust reposed in him,” the release added.
The MP’s campaign spokesperson, Samuel Baah, also stated that Hon. Oboafo Kwadwo Asante is “resolute and determined to maintain the Suhum seat for continuous development.”
The statement further urged the public to disregard pictures circulating on social media that suggest the MP’s association with the false reports.
“This statement is also to assure Suhum constituents and other well-wishers that Hon. Oboafo Kwadjo Asante is committed to contesting the 2024 elections and continuing his work for the development of Suhum,” the spokesperson concluded.
The misinformation surfaced on social media following Tuesday’s development in Parliament regarding Speaker of Parliament ruling declaring the Suhum Parliamentary seat and three others as vacant following decision by the MPs to either go independent or cross carpet.
But the decision by the speaker has been stayed by the supreme Court pending final determination of the substantive case filed by then Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markins.
