John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a challenge to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prosecute him for corruption if they possess any proof.
Speaking at a media conference at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, Mahama addressed the charges of corruption that his rivals in politics have continued to bring against him. He brazenly declared that during their nearly eight-year term in office, the present Akufo-Addo-led government would have started legal proceedings against him if they had any real evidence of corruption. Mahama emphasized that he does not fear being held responsible for his acts while serving in government. He also promised to make the existing administration responsible for their alleged wrongdoings and unethical practices.
At the same event, Mahama refuted allegations made by his political rivals that, should he be re-elected, he would repeal the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. He stated that it is nonsensical to infer that he is opposed to free SHS, emphasizing that he started the program in 2015, a decision that was applauded by UNESCO and the current president, Akufo-Addo.
Mahama explained that the main area of disagreement between the NDC and the NPP is how the free SHS policy will be implemented. He clarified that the NDC supported a gradual introduction to ensure proper preparation, including enough infrastructure, whereas the NPP chose a rapid launch. Mahama reaffirmed his support for the free SHS policy, saying that it can only be strengthened and not changed.
Mahama is running for reelection, and his comments come in the midst of a contentious political environment. In the lead-up to the upcoming elections, the former president’s criticism of the NPP and his reiteration of support for the free SHS program are probably going to be hot topics.
