Edward Ennin, the former MP for Obuasi East in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his displeasure with the party’s leadership due to their dismal showing in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Mr. Ennin stated that even if the leadership was legitimately elected to hold office for a specific amount of time, he expects them to step down or be fired.
He claimed that although they had a poor campaign and no clear plan going into the elections, the leadership did not take sufficient action to turn things around.
On Adom FM’s Burning Issues, he revealed this information while providing additional insight into the reasons behind the party’s crushing loss.
“Looking at the disgrace our executives have brought upon us, I think they should be resigning by now, but if they are failing to resign, we can sack them from their positions and the over the party and put proper administrative measures in place for it to look good to all,” he stated.
Following what he called “mafia” techniques used during the internal elections, the tough-spoken lawmaker saw that followers were apathetic.
Due process was not followed, he continued, and the party leaders’ established protocols favored a particular set of candidates that the executives wanted.
As a result, the party suffered greatly since none of the losing candidates, including their followers, participated in the campaign or cast ballots.
When Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom, the show host, asked Mr. Ennin what he thought could be done in the future, he said that the only way to improve the party’s appeal was to take it back from the existing leaders.
“The leaders of the party have created division, apathy among the party members and have lost touch with the base so it about time we sack them and reclaim the party and hand it over to people to act till we go for elections to choose new ones,” he said.
