The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to work with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the upcoming general elections and threaten Ghana’s democracy through a phony voter registration, according to Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament.
During the NDC’s “Enough is Enough” protest against the EC in Sekondi-Takoradi, Buah underlined the party’s demand that the EC address the issues brought up by the parties in order to guarantee a legitimate election.
“We want to safeguard our democracy. This call is for the peace and stability of our country. We know that the electoral commission is colluding with the NPP, so we are doing everything to stop it. We know that the register is not credible and we have asked for an independent audit. We think that is the only way to assure the people of Ghana of a credible register that will lead to transparent and credible elections,” he said.
Nana Toku, the chairman of the Western Regional NDC, also stated that they are resolved to keep working till their issues are resolved.
Dr. Sipa Yankey, the former CEO of the Ghana National Gas Company, was present at the well-attended Western Regional NDC demonstration against the EC, which had over 800 police officers on hand to provide security. The protesters presented their petition at the EC headquarters after walking from the Takoradi Mall through Effia-Kuma to Sekondi.
