The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Concern Health Education Project (CHEP), commemorated the 2024 World Meningitis Day in Accra.
This global event is observed to serve as a reminder of the critical need for awareness, prevention, and support for affected persons.
Mr Frank Raji, Director of Administration, Ministry of Health, delivering a speech on behalf of the Chief Director of the Ministry, Alhaji Hafiz Adam, mentioned that in Ghana, the northern territories (Upper West, Northern, North-East, Savanna, Oti, Bono East, and Upper-East Regions) lie within the meningitis belt of Africa, where the disease is recurrent and has devastating effects on the public.
According to the Ghana Health Service, more than four hundred people died out of 4,561 meningitis cases reported between 2010 and 2015 (GHS, 2017) and this renders meningitis a major public health challenge in Ghana, he added.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Concern Health Education Project (CHEP), Mr Isaac Ampomah, stated that the WHO, with global partners and experts involved in meningitis prevention and control, led the development of a global roadmap that sets forth a vision and roadmap to defeat meningitis by 2030.
In line with its commitment to Universal Health Coverage, through knowledge, access to safe and affordable vaccines, and collective action, there would be great strides in preventing the spread of meningitis and support for all persons affected.
