Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved the Accra Sports Stadium to host the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game between the Ghana and Sudan.
The continental football governing body (CAF) earlier revoked license of the Baba Yara Stadium, the only approved stadium to host international games in Ghana. This was as a result of the unplayable state of the stadium.
In response to the urgent situation, officials from CAF were invited by Ghana’s Ministry of Sports to inspect the Accra and Cape Coast Sports Stadia over the past weekend.
Today, CAF has approved the Accra Sports Stadium for the highly competitive clash between Ghana and Sudan.
However, the approval of the Accra Sports Stadium comes as a big relief for Ghana, who were thrown into a dilemma after CAF’s ban.
A statement from CAF to the Ghana FA reads, “Following a comprehensive review of the reports of the CAF independent inspection regarding the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadia, we are pleased to inform you that the Accra Sports Stadium has been approved to host the AFCON Qualifiers for Morocco 2025. Specifically, it will host the Group F – Matchday 3 encounter between Ghana and Sudan, which is scheduled for October 11, 2024.
“In light of this approval, we kindly request that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the stadium management team prioritize the necessary enhancements to the pitch and other critical areas of the stadium leading up to the match day to ensure an optimal experience for both teams and the attending fans.
“Please note that CAF will continue to closely monitor the readiness of the stadium for this match, as well as for future CAF-sanctioned events.”
The Black Stars will play host to Sudan on October 11, 2024 at the Accra Sports Stadium. The team will travel to Tripoli, Libya for the return fixture against Sudan on October 15.
