At least 26 German police officers were injured at an Eritrean cultural event in the city of Giessen over the weekend.
Police said groups of Eritreans opposing Eritrea’s autocratic ruler threw stones, bottles, and smoke bombs, as they tried to force their way into the festival area.
Officers responded with batons and pepper spray. 125 people are set to be charged with criminal offenses.
The Eritrean festival was organized by the Central Council of Eritreans in Germany.
The protesters called the event a propaganda exercise for the authoritarian Eritrean regime.
