An estimated two thousand residents living along river Densu in Nsawam Adoagyiri municipality in the Eastern region have been displaced by floods caused by the overflow of the river.
The Nsawam Zongo community is the worst affected. Other affected communities include Gyankrom, Lanteh, Adoagyiri, Okobeyeyie, Owireku, and the lorry station among others.
The rains which started on Saturday through to Sunday caused the River Densu to overflow its banks, forcing residents in the area to abandon their houses, livestock, and other properties for safety as their homes submerged.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh who was in Accra at the time of the incident quickly rushed to inspect the magnitude of the havoc caused in the communities.
The MP assured of facilitating relief support for the victims.
The three days of torrential rainfall recorded across the Eastern Region has led to an overflow of major river bodies causing devastating floods in many communities.
Commuters on Otorkpolu to Odumase highway have been using canoes to cross due to the overflow of a river.
” the bridge has been partially submerged by water after continuous heavy downpours in the Eastern Region which has made it difficult for commuters including vehicles to cross. Services of canoes and other humanitarian assistance have been the only way out. All road users are hereby cordially advised to plan their trips avoiding that stretch for their safety and convenience” a witness said.
Hundreds of residents in New Juaben North Municipality in Eastern Regional capital Koforidua are similarly salvaging their properties damaged after the devastating flood which cut off the city by flooding major roads, submerged homes, and collapsed houses.
