Deputy Managing Director of the Metro Mass Transit Ltd, Haroun Apaw Wiredu has revealed that 313 buses were declared unserviceable in October 2020, two months to the election and sold for paltry sum to some individuals.
He mentioned that he discovered that one bus was sold for just GHC2,500.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, January 18, 2026, he said management of the company at the time operated a criminal system known as “cannibalisation’ where they deliberately declare little faulty buses unserviceable and sold them for prices far lower than their original prices to cronies.
According to him, a review of the report also disclosed that over 400 buses were deliberately tagged unserviceable and sold amongst persons associated with the criminal system which was created.
“By 2017, when the previous government took the reins of power, it will surprise you to know that around 2017, 2018, they declared about 400 plus of buses unserviceable. Those buses were scrap, sold amongst some persons and individuals associated to be part of the system then.
“Then two months into the 2020 election in October, another 313 buses were sold amongst some cronies. When I reviewed the report, I realized that a whole bus of Metro Mass was sold at a paltry GHC2500,” he stated.
He continued: “What we realized was that the then management involved themselves in transport business, what we called cannibalisation. Cannibalisation is a deliberate attempt because they saw the business in the scrapping of buses as a low hanging fruit, as a system to milk the system.”
“Deliberately, they were just removing parts from a bus and when it gets to a certain level, they declare it unserviceable. And when they declare it unserviceable, then they call somebody to come and buy it, say GHC2500 official fee,” he noted.
He emphasised after taking office in March 2025, the new management commissioned some external auditors to look into the matter and has since submitted a report to them.
“We commissioned external auditors to get this issue done once and for all and they submitted a draft report to us last week for our consideration,” he added.
