Ghana has confirmed nine (9) new cases of COVID-19 on April 4, 2020, increasing the national case count to 214
Out of the number Six (6) were recorded in Greater Accra and three (3) from the Ashanti region. The new cases involve six (6) community infections.
According to the Ghana Health Service, GHS, among the cases from Greater Accra, one is a 37-year-old woman with no history of travel or contact with a confirmed case. One is a repeat test of a traveler under quarantine who was initially negative but converted to positive on repeat test. Four are contacts of confirmed cases with no symptoms and were detected during the enhanced contact tracing and testing.
Also “Of the three (3) cases from Ashanti region, two (2) are Ghanaians who traveled to Ghana from France within the past 14 days and the third one is a Ghanaian who has no history of travel out of the country nor contact with an any confirmed case”.
As at 4th April 2020, Ghana has recorded a total of 214 cases of COVID-19 with five (5) deaths. Currently, the number of regions reporting cases is as follows: Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Upper West-Eastern, and Upper East Region. The Greater Accra Region has most cases (189) followed by the Ashanti Region (12), Northern Region (10), Upper West Region (1), Eastern Region (1) and Upper East Region (1).
Most of the cases are reported from routine / enhanced surveillance activities. Cases from travelers under mandatory quarantine are 90.
All five (5) deaths had underlying chronic medical conditions before COVID-19 infection.
Ghana recorded the first case of COVID-19 on March 13, 2020.
President of Ghana Akufo-Addo on March 27, 2020, announced a partial lockdown of the Nation’s Capital-Accra and Parts of Greater Kumasi for two weeks as an enhanced measure to prevent increasing community spread having closed down all Borders -Land, sea and Air spaces. The government also imposed mandatory 14 days quarantine for returnees in the country. Additionally, the President has established a COVID-19 Fund to help mobilize resources to fight the pandemic.
The National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Sammy Awuku believes that the swift decisive decisions of President Akufo-Addo have resulted in low infection rates in Ghana juxtapose to happenings in other countries.
He said Ghana’s cases would have been higher if we had a President flip-flopping with decisions needed to tackle the pandemic head-on.
