Over 41,000 nurses and midwives who call themselves Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association (GUNMA) have declared to demonstrate on 28th January 2020 to demand a job.
According to them, the government promised immediate employment after school after continuing student was denied allowance but have failed to fulfill this promise.
They added that no single nurse or midwife was employed in the year 2018.
In an interview with General Secretary of the Association, Achire Abraham, said: “We are appealing to President Akufo-Addo to give us job otherwise we will hit the street and if they fail to engage us, we will drink Kalypo with Mahama as we did with President Akufo-Addo in 2016”.
In a related development; some graduate teacher trainees have been detained at the Ministries Police Station for unlawfully picketing at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra.
The teachers said to be from 2016, 2017 and 2018 batches of graduates from various teacher training institutions were at the GES headquarters on Monday to demand postings.
But Director of Operations at the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Kwesi Ofori, is worried at the growing menace of illegal demonstrations in the country.
Addressing the media after the arrest of 18 trainee teachers at the premises of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Monday, ACP Ofori said the police will adopt measures to deal with individuals who embark on demonstrations without informing the police.
