Horace Ekow Ewusi, Central Regional Vice Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is currently in the grips of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police assisting them in their investigations as to the where about of the missing 500 excavators.
He is currently undergoing interrogations at the CID Headquarters in Accra over his role in some missing excavators and other equipment seized from illegal mining operators.
His arrest follows a request made by the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Professor Frimpong Boateng who some have accused of selling of the missing excavators.
The ‘Request for Investigation’ letter written by Professor Frimpong Boateng to the Director General of the Police CID said Mr Ekow Awusi was contracted to cart excavators and other vehicles and pieces of equipment seized by Operation Vanguard to designated areas for safe keeping.
Information reaching me indicates that he has sold an unknown number of the pieces of equipment including excavators, the minister said in his letter requesting the CID boss to investigate Mr Awusi.
A visit by the investigation team to Tema Community One, specifically to the New Washing Bay where he is alleged to have sent some 34 excavators only revealed the presence of one excavator.
Preliminary investigations also suggest that Mr Awusi’s signature authorized the release of all the equipment and excavators from their authorized locations.
