At the end of 2021, the court fined 5,690 drivers to the tune of Gh¢2,527,676.00 after they were arrested and sent to court by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for traffic offenses Nationwide.
According to the MTTD Report, no driver was fined Upper East, Northern, Oti, and Savannah Region from January to December 2021.
But Accra and Kumasi Recorded the highest fines, i.e GH¢714,764.00 and 790,544.00 respectively.
In 2020, the total number of drivers fined by the court was 2,381 with an amount of GH¢1,118,128.00.
The MTTD Report revealed that 28 drivers were jailed for traffic offenses, 84 were discharged and 80 bench warrant was issued to arrest drivers.
In addition, 1,188 drivers are under investigation, 704 are awaiting trials, and cases convicted were 4,799 while total cases recorded were 6,877.
At the end of 2021, 105 drivers were arrested for over speeding, 118 for overloading, 153 were drunk while driving, and 219 were using worn-out tyres.
The number of drivers who were arrested for driving without a license was 1,299, those with expired documents were 768, those who were driving without using the seat belt were 169 and 203 others were driving without a helmet.
