An Accra Circuit court has discharged 60 persons who were arrested in connection with the secessionist movement in parts of the Volta Region.
They were discharged on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.
Their arrest followed violent attacks by some members of the secessionist group, Western Togoland Restoration Front, blocking some key routes in the Volta Region causing an impediment in the free flow of traffic on Friday, September 27.
Early that Friday morning, the group attacked and ransacked two police stations in Mepe and Aveyime, making away with weapons and kidnapping three officers.
Following their arrest, they were charged with conspiracy to commit crime, namely to attend a meeting of the prohibited organisation, to participate in a campaign of a prohibited organisation and rioting with weapons.
However, lawyer for the arrested suspected secessionist stated that his clients are not members of the Western Togoland Restoration Front (WTRF).
According to reports, the basis of their release is unknown.
