A cumulative number of 684 Senior High School students have been infected with covid-19 in all 33 districts and Municipalities in the Eastern region.
Out of the number Asuogyaman District recorded the highest number with 157 cases among students followed by Birim North, 66 cases, Lower Maya Krobo, 54, Kwahu East 48, Nsawam -Adoagyiri, 42 cases.
No death was recorded among the students.
Eastern Region has a total of 30 active cases of Covid-19 out of the number 27 are in New Juaben South Municipality while Kwahu Afram Plains North and Nsawam have 2 and 1 active cases respectively as of Sunday, June 20, 2021.
The total number of confirmed cases in the region since the pandemic stands at 4,395 with cumulative recoveries and discharges of 4,287 representing 97.5%
78 of the infected person have however died. The case fatality rate in the region is 1.8%.
The number of Nurses infected is 958 representing 21.8% with 6 fatalities recorded.
Meanwhile, the most contagious Covid-19 variant, originating from India, has been recorded in Ghana.
Head of the West Africa Center for Cell Biology and Infectious Pathogens, WACCBIP, of the University of Ghana, Professor Gordon Awendare confirmed that the Indian variant, also known as the Delta variant, is one of the forty-five (45) variants that are currently in Ghana.
The Indian strain has caused huge spikes in India and a serious increase in cases in the UK even though large sections of the population in those countries are vaccinated.
