A total of 7,718 potential voters were registered by the Electoral Commission in the West Municipality of the Eastern Region in the first six days of Voter Registration exercise which started from 30th June to 5th July 2020.
Out of the number, 1,291 people registered in Day one,1,678 in day two,1,644 in day three, 1,299 in day four,933 in day five, and 873 on day six respectively.
In an interview with the Electoral Commission Director for West Akyem, Mr. Kwadwo Debrah-Gyamfi said the Commission is expecting a little over 70,000 eligible voters to register in the Municipality before the end of the Exercise.
He commended Political Parties, Security Personnel, EC officials, Health Directorate, and applicants for their support for the Phase one of Batch one in the National exercise and he was optimistic for a peaceful exercise in the rest of the days.
Mr. Debrah-Gyamfi said few applicants were challenged over their Nationality and Being non-residents and said the EC will address all the issues after the exercise.
The EC boss said they have set up a special registration center at the premises of the West Akyem Municipal Assembly for Persons with Disabilities, Pensioners, Pregnant women, and Nursing mothers who cannot join queues in their polling station to register and vote.
He called on applicants to observe COVID -19 protocols at the registration centers to avoid contracting viruses during registration.
