Former Youth and Sports Minister, Joseph Yamin says he wants clubs who are the main architect of the game in the country to benefit from the FIFA coronavirus relief money despite the Ghana Football Association claiming ownership of the fund.
Following the suspension of football activities in the country due to the outbreak of coronavirus, clubs have called on the Football Association to come to their aid to help ease their burden.
However, the FA requested a stimulus package from the government which many condemned.
The world’s football governing body earlier confirmed that all member associations will receive a sum of $500,000 as part of measures to help combat the effect of the coronavirus on football in the country.
The Communications Director of the Football Association, Henry Asante Twum disclosed in an interview that the money is meant for operational cost at the FA and not for the clubs.
But Yamin in an interview with Koforidua based Bryt FM expressed disappointment in the nation’s football governing body over their decision to keep the money.
“In fact, I was surprised when I heard the FA saying the $500,000 from FIFA would be used to pay debts owed by the GFA instead of giving it to the clubs. The truth is that FIFA’s existence depends on member associations and federations likewise the GFA because without the Clubs the FA is nothing”
“It will be prudent for the FA to consider the clubs because the FA is nothing without the clubs. I want the FA to share this money with the clubs to free them from financial constraints”
“The stimulus package from FIFA is aimed at saving Ghana football amid coronavirus. So why should the FA decide to keep the money rather than looking at the interest of the clubs? He quizzed.
“Whoever advised the association did not help them. They should reconsider their decision” he ended.
