Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 election, has charged that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is harassing and intimidating opposition party members by utilizing state power.
The former vice president bemoaned what he called an increasing pattern of politically motivated arrests targeting NPP leaders and supporters, after the party lost power while speaking at a party rally in the Ashanti region’s Asokwa constituency.
“We are witnessing what is happening after losing power. Currently, the NDC is intimidating us with power, harassing, and abusing us. Not long ago, Chairman Wontumi was arrested. Chairman Abronye has also been arrested. They are arresting our TikTokers, bloggers, appointees,” Dr Bawumia lamented.
“It means that all the NPP needs is unity, so that in 2028, we’ll take back the power”, he added.
His remarks come after Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, was arrested for allegedly causing financial loss to the state.
at a similar vein, on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, was taken into custody and charged at the Accra Circuit Court.
Due to two charges of “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace,” he was placed under police detention until Friday, September 12.
Such events, according to Dr. Bawumia, highlight the necessity of NPP unity in the run-up to the general elections in 2028.
“This means that we need to unite so that in 2028 we will come to power,” he urged party members.
