My dear Husband,
Once upon a time, a young lady’s birthday came around and she who was used to receiving lots of cards and calls on her birthday, did not receive anything. Not even a phone call to wish her happy birthday. It seemed that everyone had forgotten her birthday, even her parents, siblings and her boyfriend who was on a business trip to Tamale. She felt abandoned and felt that if she dropped dead, no one would even notice.
At home that evening, as she took her key from her purse to open the door, she hesitated. The house seemed deserted deepening her sense of desolation. She sighed as she opened the door. Immediately, as if by magic, the whole house sprang to life. The lights came on and over fifty voices burst into singing, “Happy Birthday to you”.
The young lady jumped out of her skin. She could not believe her eyes, for there, crowded into the room were her parents who lived in Kumasi, all seven siblings who were scattered around the country, her closest friends and some of her colleagues including her boss. Then out of the crowd came a young handsome man with a huge smile on his face. He was her boyfriend. He said, “Happy birthday, angel” as he gave her a kiss and a long hug to the applause and cheers of the crowd. The young lady burst into tears as she melted into his arms and kept muttering between sniffs, “ Oh my God, I can’t believe it; I can’t believe it”.
That was one of the best days of her life and her parents and friends still talk about it.
My dear husband, you already know that I am that young lady and you, are the incredible, marvellous young man who moved heaven and earth to make that birthday the most memorable of my life. You always found ways to overwhelm me and sweep me off my feet.
These days, I find myself often lying down in bed unable to sleep. On those nights, I would look long and hard at you lying beside me and wonder, at what point was that exciting, marvellous man replaced with this boring, clueless annoying man snoring beside me?
My dear, I want that young man back! He was the one I fell in love with and he had a way of doing ordinary things in extraordinary ways.
Now that was by way of introduction.
