The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed that the current voters’ register to successfully elect about 6,600 District Assembly members and about 33,000 Unit Committee members it was clear that there was nothing wrong with it.
However, the NDC has warned the government not to release money to the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters’ register for the 2020 election.
Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the NDC, who was speaking at the media briefing to highlight issues on the Party’s stance in Accra, called on the media, civil society organizations, and the diplomatic community to make their voices heard on the decision of the EC to compile a new register for the 2020 elections.
He said, “What has suddenly gone wrong with the register, or what is likely to go wrong with the register between now and Election Day of 7th December 2020?”
However, the EC has submitted its budget to Parliament which includes monies to expend to compile the new register.
The Commission has tabled some GH¢444million for the exercise. This, the EC argues is a better option than updating the old one which has been described as overstretched.
For the governing New Patriotic Party, once the Commission can justify the need to compile a new register, they would support it.
With the NPP’s majority in the House, the EC’s budget is likely to be approved.
